Representative images for determination of intestinal morphology and crypt cell proliferation were taken from mounted slides after immunohistochemistry (Ki67) staining. Ten images at 40 × magnification of clearly visible and well-oriented villi and their associated crypts (A) were obtained for each sample to measure villus height (from the top to the base of the villus, as indicated with the double arrow blue line) and crypt depth (from the base of the villus to the bottom of the crypt, as indicated with a double arrow red line). Ten images at 100 × magnification of the crypts (B) were captured for each sample for counting of the Ki67 positive cells as an indicator of crypt cell proliferation
